Portage County Court Calendars Explained
Portage County publishes no single countywide search form for hearings. The Portage County Clerk's Court Schedules page serves as a weekly index. It covers Common Pleas, Municipal, and Domestic Relations staff. The Municipal Court posts its own schedules for its three judges and magistrate. For case details, Portage County CourtView Public Access is the official route. It is not presented as a live daily calendar. A schedule tells you which judge or session to ask about. It does not fix the current date for every case.
Labels you will see include status conference, final pretrial, case-management conference, motion hearing, and sentencing. Meanings vary by division and by case. In Municipal criminal practice, scheduling usually follows arraignment, a not-guilty plea, and judge assignment. In Municipal civil cases, an answer goes to the assigned judge for a pretrial. A court calendar, a docket entry, and a personal notice serve different roles. All three can matter at once.
The Clerk's official Court Schedules page is the countywide starting index for those weekly links.
The schedule index makes the point plain. Court-date work in Portage County starts with the right division, not with a guess at one shared calendar.
Portage County Court Schedule Listings
The Common Pleas General Division posts weekly schedules on its own schedule page. The Municipal Court page lists its own links. They cover Judges Mark K. Fankhauser, Kevin T. Poland, Melissa R. Roubic, and the magistrate. Each is a staff-specific calendar channel. None promises a case-name lookup. Nor does any state a refresh time. Before acting on any Portage County schedule, match the court, branch, and case number. The Common Pleas weekly-schedules page is the official source for General Division schedule access.
That page helps you find the right General Division schedule first. Confirmation then comes from the clerk or assignment staff. The Municipal Court schedules page provides the matching Portage County links for the municipal judges and the magistrate.
The municipal schedule page also makes one thing clear: Ravenna and Kent are branches of a single countywide Portage County Municipal Court.
Finding Your Court Date
Use whatever Portage County channel fits your question. CourtView can locate public case information for its listed courts from 1992 forward. The county does not present it as a daily calendar. Treat it as a case lookup. It is not a hearing schedule. The Clerk's index and the judge and magistrate pages carry the published court calendar route. Ohio offers no unified statewide trial-court docket search covering Portage County. The Ohio trial-court directory helps you find courts. It does not give case dates.
- Start with the Portage County court, division, branch, and case number shown on the Portage County citation, notice, or case material.
- Check the official CourtView entry when available and complete its image challenge; use the county's exact case-number instruction and Help control.
- Check the applicable Portage County weekly schedule for the judge, magistrate, or court staff linked by the Portage County Clerk or Municipal Court.
- For uncertainty, call the owning clerk or assignment staff: General Clerk 330-297-3644, Ravenna Traffic/Criminal 330-297-3639, Kent Traffic/Criminal 330-678-9100, or Domestic Relations 330-297-3475.
- Use the appropriate Portage County clerk counter or the Kent public display terminal for in-person access; request an official entry or notice if the date needs documentary confirmation.
- For a record or date that remains unavailable, use the Clerk's division-specific mail or email public-records request channel with enough identifying information.
The Portage County Magistrates page is another official scheduling source, and it lists Zoom information only for a previously scheduled case-management conference. So do not assume every hearing is remote. The Common Pleas Magistrates source supplies the county's limited published remote-hearing context.
The magistrate page points to one lesson. Confirm each specific setting instead of presuming a virtual appearance is allowed.
Portage County Court Date Maintenance Plan
CourtView sometimes goes down for maintenance. A Portage County search can also come back unclear. When either of those things happens, your next step is the confirmation chain. Match the court, branch, and case number. Check the staff schedule. Then call the division or assignment office. A brand-new filing may need clerk confirmation. The county says public information updates daily and accuracy is not guaranteed. The system can go down for maintenance. A result's order does not signal date order or court priority.
Judge Pittman handles Common Pleas General. His current Portage County instruction says status-conference pretrials are in person. That detail is a good reminder. Read the notice and the court's instruction for your exact case. An old weekly schedule can still tell you whom to call. A later docket entry, a notice, or direct clerk confirmation is better proof that a setting moved. Judge Pittman's official page provides the Portage County status-conference instruction and assignment contacts.
The judge page shows why. A case-specific hearing notice and updated instruction control over any generic calendar assumption in Portage County.
How to Read a Court Setting
A Portage County court date is more than a date. It is a bundle of details. Which division, which judge, what kind of hearing? Portage County publishes no countywide list of setting codes or calendar-row fields, so the reading checklist below comes from the county's own court channels rather than any claim that every CourtView result shows the same labels. When an entry is unclear, the right clerk or assignment staff can identify the Portage County court that owns the setting and confirm the current record. Ask them early.
| Date | The scheduled calendar day. Confirm it against the latest Portage County entry or notice after a continuance request. |
|---|---|
| Time | The listed start time for the setting. Do not infer a uniform docket-call or individual-hearing convention where the county has not published one. |
| Court or branch | The Portage County division and, for Municipal Court, the Ravenna or Kent branch that owns the setting. |
| Judge or magistrate | The judicial officer or staff schedule used to locate the applicable Portage County weekly listing. |
| Setting type | A label such as pretrial, status conference, case-management conference, motion hearing, trial, or sentencing, each with a different procedural purpose. |
Judge Doherty's Portage County page pairs courtroom, schedule, and records links for one General Division judge.
That page helps you route a setting question to the right Portage County court. It does not hand you a countywide calendar codebook.
Portage County STAR Court Dates
STAR stands for Successful Treatment And Recovery. It is the Municipal Court's specialized mental-health docket. The county says participants get monthly judge status hearings and a one-year probation term. STAR is not a separate public calendar-search system, though. To ask about an underlying case, use a Portage County case search, the court schedule, or the right clerk or probation contact. Eligibility and treatment details are individual. No public docket result will show them.
The same caution fits HOPE Drug Court in Common Pleas and RISE Drug Court in Municipal Court. A specialty-program mention is context only. It does not replace the charge, plea, judgment, court, or case number in the underlying Portage County record. The county offers no separate public specialty-docket lookup. Confirm through the court's regular case channel instead.
- Status conference
- A Portage County proceeding used to review case progress; a Common Pleas instruction identifies some status-conference pretrials as in person.
- Pretrial
- In Portage Municipal civil practice, a court-supervised meeting to narrow issues and explore settlement after an answer is forwarded to the assigned judge.
- Case-management conference
- A meeting to organize and advance a case; the county's magistrate page describes Zoom only for one that was already scheduled.
- Continuance
- A court-approved postponement that may be granted or denied by a Portage County judge or magistrate.
Continuances, Resets, and Cancellations
Portage County's continuance form asks for a case number and the original date. It also wants a reason, contact and signature information, and proof of service. Filing it changes nothing by itself. A judge or magistrate may continue or deny the request, the county states. For Municipal civil pretrials, the local rule sends requests to the assigned judge. The original Portage County date still governs. It holds until a later entry, notice, or court confirmation establishes a change.
If a setting seems to move, check the court's current schedule and Public Access first. Then call the division if the result is unclear. The weekly schedule is helpful context. But Portage County posts no universal refresh time. There is no current-setting marker and no reset-code glossary for it. A date dropping off an older schedule proves nothing about dismissal, cancellation, or a new hearing date.
A continuance request is just a request. The court still has to act. Rely on the later notice or entry, not the paperwork itself.
Portage County Citation Date First
In a Portage County traffic case, the printed citation controls the first date and place. Contesting the charge? Show up on the printed date and time. The county's payment guidance says the same when a citation requires an appearance. A Plea of Not Guilty and Waiver of Time form can take the place of appearing in person. Some charges still require a personal appearance. Follow the citation or court instruction. Never treat a payment screen as your Portage County court date.
The official payment route starts with finding a payable case in the county system. Its instructions mention a green Pay icon. That icon appears only when payment is available. So online payment is case-specific. It comes after the printed date and court are clear. If online access fails, fall back on the Ravenna and Kent Traffic/Criminal clerk contacts, the official schedule, and the citation itself.
Portage date priority: Read the citation's date and appearance instruction before choosing any online payment option.
If You Miss a Court Setting
Missed a Portage County court date? Call the clerk or court that owns the case. Do it right away. Give the branch, the case number, and the missed date, and ask for the current entry or notice. For traffic cases, the county warns that late payment can bring late fees, a license suspension, or a vehicle-registration block. State law allows failure-to-appear and failure-to-pay consequences. Still, one missed date does not fix an outcome. Check the actual court record.
Missed a Portage County setting? Do not rely on an old calendar or payment screen to decide what changed.
Contact the appropriate Clerk division or assignment staff promptly and request the current court entry, notice, or instruction for the case.
If a warrant, bond, suspension, or other consequence may be involved, obtain advice from a licensed attorney about the specific Portage County case before appearing.
Confirming directly also guards against a classic calendar error. An old schedule is not an active setting. An official entry or clerk reply gives the current information from the right court.
Portage County Court Calendar Branches
Portage County Municipal Court runs two branches, Ravenna and Kent. They share one countywide jurisdiction. The everyday docket mixes traffic and criminal misdemeanors, felony initial appearances and bond work, civil claims up to $15,000, and small claims up to $6,000. A city police citation does not create a city judicial calendar. Where you check a setting depends on the branch. It also depends on the assigned judge or magistrate, and the case record. No city court stands behind that ticket. The Portage County Municipal Court does.
| Portage channel | Best use for date research | Limit to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Clerk and court schedules | Locate the relevant judge, magistrate, or staff weekly schedule. | Not a verified live case-date search. |
| CourtView Public Access | Locate listed Portage County case information and its chronology. | CAPTCHA-gated; live calendar fields are not verified. |
| Clerk, assignment staff, or counter | Confirm an uncertain Portage County setting or obtain an official entry or notice. | Needs the right court, branch, and case identification. |
Portage County's 2025 annual report describes work across both municipal branches, not a city-by-city calendar. That makes the branch structure a routing fact, not a schedule. The individual hearing date lives in the case record. A search through Portage County Case Lookup can identify the case. Confirm the schedule after that.
